Website Security Checklist: 10 Steps to Protect Your Business Website

By admin /

Small business websites are attacked every day, not because anyone has singled them out, but because automated bots scan the whole internet looking for weak passwords, outdated plugins and exposed files. When we look at the server logs of a typical website, a large share of the requests are bots probing for login pages and secret configuration files. Here is a practical checklist to keep your site safe.

1. Use HTTPS everywhere

Your site should load only over https://, with the padlock in the browser, and redirect every http:// address to the secure version. Browsers warn visitors about insecure forms, and Google prefers secure sites.

2. Keep everything updated

Most hacked websites were running outdated software. Update your CMS, theme and plugins (for WordPress) or framework and libraries (for custom sites) regularly, and remove anything you no longer use.

3. Strong, unique passwords

Every admin account needs a long, unique password, stored in a password manager. Never share one login between staff members.

4. Turn on two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication (2FA) stops most password attacks. Enable it for your website admin, hosting account, domain registrar and business email.

5. Limit who has admin access

Give each person only the access they need, and remove accounts when staff or agencies leave.

6. Never expose secret files

Bots constantly request files like .env, backup archives and configuration files. Make sure no secret keys, database dumps or backups are stored in public folders on your website.

7. Automatic, off-site backups

Back up your website and database automatically, keep copies in a separate location, and, most importantly, test restoring a backup now and then. A backup you cannot restore is not a backup.

8. Protect your forms

Contact and enquiry forms attract spam. Use spam protection, validate inputs, and never email sensitive customer details in plain text.

9. Protect your domain and email

Lock your domain at the registrar and keep renewal details current; an expired domain takes your website and email down. Set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC so others cannot easily send fake emails in your name.

10. Monitor and act quickly

Use uptime monitoring so you know immediately if the site goes down, and check Google Search Console for security warnings. If something looks wrong, change passwords, restore from a clean backup and patch the cause.
