Why Website Speed Matters: Core Web Vitals for Small Business Owners

By admin /

Most of your visitors open your website on a phone, often on mobile data. If the page takes too long to appear, many of them simply leave and open a competitor's site instead. Website speed is not a technical detail: it directly affects enquiries, sales and your Google rankings.

What Google measures: Core Web Vitals

Google uses three Core Web Vitals to judge the experience of real visitors:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how long the main content, usually the big image or heading, takes to appear. Aim for under 2.5 seconds.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks. Aim for under 200 milliseconds.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much the page jumps around while loading, for example when an image pushes text down just as you try to tap. Aim for under 0.1.

How to test your website for free

  1. Open PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev) and enter your web address.
  2. Look at the mobile results first; that is what most customers use.
  3. If your site has enough visitors, you will see real-user data at the top. The lab score below it helps find the causes.
  4. In Google Search Console, the Core Web Vitals report shows which pages need work.

The fixes that matter most

1. Make images lighter

Oversized images are the most common problem we see. A 600 KB PNG banner can often become a 60 KB WebP with no visible difference. Resize images to the size they are shown at, use modern formats like WebP, and lazy-load images further down the page.

2. Turn on compression and caching

Text files (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) should be sent compressed with gzip or Brotli, which often cuts their size by 70–80%. Caching lets returning visitors and the content delivery network serve pages without rebuilding them each time.

3. Cut heavy plugins and scripts

Every slider, chat widget, tracking pixel and page-builder add-on adds weight. Remove what you do not use, and load the rest only on the pages that need it.

4. Use good hosting

Cheap shared hosting can make the server slow to respond before anything even starts loading. Hosting with a content delivery network (CDN) serves your pages from servers close to your visitors.

5. Reserve space for images and embeds

Set width and height on images, videos and ads so the layout does not jump as they load. This fixes most CLS problems.

What speed does for your business

  • More visitors stay long enough to see your products and contact you.
  • Google Ads landing pages that load fast cost less per click.
  • Better user experience supports better rankings in search.
